Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a variety of services that may differ among districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Health District office can provide information regarding public health preparedness and communication systems, collaborating with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other health districts to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for families unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for your travel destination. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials.
