Idaho's seven health districts function in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands, offering diverse services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. These programs cover areas such as daycare, epidemiology (including animal bites and food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (like radon), lead health initiatives, methamphetamine lab concerns, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include oversight of critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational materials and speakers can be arranged for community outreach. Immunizations are provided by local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunization records. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC supports pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, who meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
