Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering a range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding flora and fauna. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A wide variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccinations from the health department will need to pay for the vaccines. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be available. The Immunization Registry, a free and confidential service, helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunization history and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers. It offers individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack health insurance for these services, meet income requirements, and fall into specific age categories. Languages offered include English and Spanish, with interpreters available.
