Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other local and state organizations. Each district has its own board of health, appointed by county commissioners, and operates independently of state agencies. The services provided can differ by district and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology, food establishment permits, indoor air quality, lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs oversee critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization clinics provide routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination status. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children by providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and counseling. The Resource Nurse offers general health information and referrals, and vouchers for acute care may be available. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests.
