Idaho consists of seven health districts that collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state organizations. Each district operates independently and is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. The services offered can differ by district, addressing local needs, which may include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health services, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in this area focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Health Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste Management.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning assistance, which includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (covering cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease testing, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccines through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. Vaccinations for children are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact the local health department to determine required vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations and ensures they receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded initiative offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. To qualify, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in the last five years or never had one; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (with clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
