Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering diverse services that differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs addressing the intersection of human health with the physical environment, such as Day Care Health Inspections, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives cover Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service includes education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics and special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should contact their local health department to determine necessary vaccines for specific destinations, and adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor track immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program offering healthy foods through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests and meet income guidelines. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven’t had a pap test in five years or longer, women under 50 with suspicious breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women over 65 who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
