Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from any state agency. They cater to local demands by providing diverse services that can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) along with referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at health departments or special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Those receiving vaccines from the health department will be responsible for the cost of the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of your immunizations, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, one-on-one counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program is aimed at women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Ages 50-64, Ages 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms suggestive of breast or cervical cancer, or women aged 65 and older who are ineligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
