Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services, which may differ among districts. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics or occasionally at special off-site events, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about required vaccines for travel destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods monthly via WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, who meet income guidelines, and are either aged 50-64, aged 30-49 with symptoms, or aged 65 and older without Medicare or Medicare Part B.
