Idaho is divided into seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district operates independently and has a board of health appointed by county commissioners. The services provided can differ from one district to another, catering to local requirements. These services may include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are contracted through the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas like daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. The Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Immunizations for children are provided at local health departments, often at little to no cost for those unable to pay, with overseas immunizations available by appointment. Adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination history. The WIC program offers nutritional support to women, infants, and children, providing healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services.
