Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a variety of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutritional programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives encompass areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease testing, and HIV testing) and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who are unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for various travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccinations from the health department will need to cover the vaccine cost. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of your immunizations and ensure you receive only the necessary vaccines when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is the supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, providing: Healthy foods monthly that can be purchased with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available to women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had a pap test; under 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (clinician approval required); or age 65 and older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
