Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, which encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Travel vaccinations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for specific destinations. Adults may also have access to vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants under one year; and Children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women lacking health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in five years or longer, or never had one; under age 50 with breast cancer symptoms (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or without Medicare part B.
