Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners, and they operate independently of state agencies. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, with many services provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This program offers Family Planning services, which encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational materials and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments facilitate routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, so it's advisable to contact the local health department for the necessary vaccines for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a complimentary, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of your immunization history and ensures you receive the necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women who lack health insurance for mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without a pap test in 5 years or longer, or never had one; under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare or Medicare part B.
