Idaho's seven health districts operate in conjunction with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations, with each district governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab assessments, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps individuals and healthcare providers track vaccination status. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who qualify based on income and age criteria.
