Idaho's seven health districts operate in close partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district, governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners, is independent of any state agency and addresses local needs by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. Services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information regarding available services in your area, contact your nearest Health District office. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development initiatives include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. The Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. Local health districts also provide routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics, often at low or no cost for parents unable to pay, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should check with their local health district for necessary vaccines for specific destinations. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors track immunizations and ensure they receive only the necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition services, including monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
