Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local agencies. Each district has a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a range of services that may differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency service responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, thorough physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Immunizations are offered through local health departments, providing routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should consult their local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations and ensures timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance covering these tests, based on specific income guidelines and age criteria.
