Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local demands by offering diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste. Land Development programs include Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, with specific income and age criteria.
