Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the connections between human health and the physical environment, including the ecosystem of plants and animals. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical examinations (which include cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A range of birth control methods is available. Educational materials can be requested. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine vaccinations for children through clinics at the health department or special off-site events. These vaccinations are generally low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. It's advisable to contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for travel destinations. Vaccines for adults, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you, your family, and your healthcare provider track immunizations and ensure you receive necessary vaccines timely.
