John F. Kennedy High School

This institution is tailored for students facing moderate to severe developmental disabilities. Its educational program adheres to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, emphasizing the growth of students' confidence and abilities, particularly in communication and personal independence. The program employs evidence-based strategies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual aids, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communication tools, functional behavioral assessments, and positive behavioral supports. The Rosemary Kennedy School offers elementary, middle, and high school classes, along with district-based classes that promote mainstreaming opportunities. Community-based instruction plays a crucial role in the curriculum, complementing conventional classroom education. Students engage in recreational activities (such as library visits and bowling), life skills training (like grocery shopping and dining out), volunteer placements (at Mercy Hospital and Hofstra University), and vocational experiences in the community (including fast food and retail jobs). Each student receives education from a multidisciplinary team that includes the classroom teacher, aides, psychologist, social worker, related service providers, curriculum specialists, and administrators. Parents are actively involved in their child's learning through daily communication notebooks, meetings, visits, training sessions, and support groups. Transition planning for students aged 12 to 21 is coordinated by vocational rehabilitation counselors and social workers, in collaboration with students and their families, ahead of graduation.
