Island Trees Middle School

This institution caters to students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, offering a curriculum that adheres to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. The program aims to foster students' confidence and capabilities, emphasizing communication skills and personal independence. It employs evidence-based strategies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual aids, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communication tools, functional behavioral assessments, and positive behavioral supports. The Rosemary Kennedy School encompasses elementary, middle, and high school classes, along with district-based classes that facilitate mainstreaming opportunities. Community-based instruction is integral to the curriculum, enhancing traditional classroom learning through recreational activities (like library visits and bowling), life skills training (such as grocery shopping and dining out), volunteer opportunities (at Mercy Hospital and Hofstra University), and vocational experiences in the community (including fast food outlets and retail stores). An interdisciplinary team, consisting of classroom teachers, aides, psychologists, social workers, related service personnel, curriculum specialists, and administrators, educates each student. Parents are encouraged to engage in their child's educational journey through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, training sessions, and support groups. Transition planning for students aged 12 to 21 is coordinated by vocational rehabilitation counselors and social workers, in collaboration with students and their families, prior to graduation.
