This institution caters to students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, offering an instructional program that aligns with New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. The curriculum aims to foster communication abilities and personal independence, employing evidence-based strategies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual aids, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communication tools, functional behavioral assessments, and positive behavioral supports. The Rosemary Kennedy School includes elementary, middle, and high school classes, as well as district-based classes that provide opportunities for mainstreaming. Community-based instruction is a vital component of the curriculum, enhancing traditional classroom experiences. Students engage in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills training (grocery shopping, dining out), volunteer placements (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University), and vocational opportunities within the community (fast food outlets, retail shops). Each student is supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes the classroom teacher, aides, psychologist, social worker, related service professionals, curriculum educators, and administrators. Parental involvement is encouraged through communication notebooks, conferences, visits, training sessions, and support groups. Transition planning for students aged 12 to 21 is coordinated by vocational rehabilitation counselors and social workers in collaboration with the students and their families before graduation.
