Fair Housing Council Of Oregon
Community Resource
About this resource
This program ensures equal access to housing by offering educational resources and outreach services that clarify fair housing laws. It investigates complaints of discrimination related to acquiring or maintaining housing and offers enforcement assistance. Based on the findings, referrals may be made to attorneys, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), or relevant state agencies. While it does not handle complaints directly, the program assists with illegal discrimination in all housing contexts, including shelters. Fair housing laws, which exist at the federal, state, and local levels, prohibit discrimination based on 'protected classes' such as race, color, national origin, religion, gender, families with children, and disability, with additional protections available at state and local levels. These laws apply to rental, sales, lending, and insurance transactions. Discriminatory actions can include denial of housing, refusal to negotiate, misinformation, eviction, selective enforcement of rules, misleading advertisements, harassment, intimidation, service provision issues, or steering practices.
Intake Procedure: To initiate a complaint, visit the website and fill out the online form or send an email. Be prepared to provide the housing unit's address, names of involved parties, names of any witnesses, and the date of the incident.
Fees: There are no fees associated with this service.
