Each district features a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local requirements, offering a wide range of services that differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service offers Family Planning resources, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Please contact your local health department to determine the necessary vaccines for specific destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for them. Adult vaccines, such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you, your family, and your doctor track your immunization history and ensure you receive the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. The Women's Health Check is available for women who lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and are one of the following: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older, not eligible for Medicare or without Medicare part B.
